When you are using Facebook or Twitter for marketing you should have a social networking business plan in place to maximise your efforts. This should include connecting with people, commenting on updates, communicating with groups and pages and posting content.
You should just have a simple business plan that you use each day to cover all the areas above. And it’s one of these areas I want to touch on today.
As part of using social networking in business the most import thing you can do is connecting with people. Article syndication is great but it’s the connect with different types of people that will give you the most exposure.

Adding friends is a great way to meet new people and to share ideas and should be part of your strategic business plan online. If you’re busy then more often than not your friends requests will be accepted while you are away or asleep.
Now this is not a problem as most people will send a short welcome message to introduce themselves to you. This is something you should also do when accepting friends.
However I want to go into a subject that has bugged for quite sometime and would like your feedback on this.
Is offering a free gift on that first point of contact just plain spam?
In my opinion it is and I will tell you why. It is part of our entire social networking business plan to help people by offering value and have them join our list. That’s how we make money, from our lists and the relationship we have with our lists.
These so called gifts can come as ebooks, videos or audios, just about anything that cost nothing to the sender.
So let me cut to the chase and cut through the BS for you. These free gifts are to serve one purpose and one purpose only and that is to get you onto a list so they can market to you.
A Free Gift as Part of You Social Networking Business Plan
I have no problem with free gifts, it’s what every marketer uses in exchange for your name and email address. That’s the deal, you give me your email address and I will send you some valuable information.
The problem is the way that it is done. I know that a friendship is like a gift but just because I have accepted you as a friend on Facebook doesn’t mean we are friends yet. Friendship is about building a relationship and getting to know the business. So as part of your simple business plan forget the free gift and work on the relationship.
We all know where the free gift is heading and that is onto your list. I might not need or want your free gift and I know you think it’s a nice thing to do but we can see though it now.
Build Relationships as Part of Your Social Networking Business Plan
Find out a little bit about the person you have connected with. You don’t have to ask them about business. Ask about the hobbies, their likes and dislike. Get to know them as a person. Social networking in business is all about knowing people and what they want.
Once you have found out more about someone they will be more open to your offer of a free gift. You wouldn’t go up to a complete stranger and give them a free gift would you?
